Welcome to a brand new Nor Cal Pro Sports Report! This week hits in the middle of the heavy season, as baseball, football, and even futbol overlap, with hoops and hockey on the horizon. This week on the Report:

The Earthquakes have "Bucked" all expectations, particularly at home, thrusting themselves into the playoff pic. How have they done it, and can they sustain it? A showdown against a familiar foe will answer a lot of questions;

The Giants have a lot to write home about, even as their so-so season winds down. Meanwhile, a host of unusual, and unusually promising, September callups leave a lot to chew on before the offseason looms;

The A's continue their up-and-down ways, seeking offense even as they bid goodbye to a born hitter. What does their pitching and youth movement indicate for the future?

The Raiders open up the season in inauspicious fashion, showing a national audience just how far they have to go. Do solid performances from the Fargas-McFadden-Russell triumverate mean hope is on the way, or is Al clogging up the fast Lane to success?

And the 49ers have nothing to brag about, after a flat loss at home against the lowly cards. Hear who looked good, who looked bad, and whether Alex Smith has taken his last snap as a 49er.

It's all the news that's fit to air, once again on the Northern California Pro Sports Report!

UP NEXT: Nick Garcia, captain of the surging Earthquakes, stops by for a revealing chat. Plus ,the 49ers and Raiders sniff a chance at redemption, and the ball teams scan their youth movements while playing spoiler.

The Nor Cal Pro Sports BLOG:

All the latest info, anecdotes and opinions from the Report's own Jess Zitrin.

It's the political season (if you hadn't noticed) and one party has traditionally benefitted handsomely from major league athletes and owners. But now, it looks like the gap is narrowing...

Baseball fans: heard of H/BIP? I still think the A's cut loose Mark Ellis at season's end. But this is one argument for hidden value that's right up Billy's alley.
Meanwhile, the Oakland Trib says the Runnin' A's may be just a fad...

The aptly named Josh Outman posted his first win; asked pregame to describe the lefty's stuff, Skip Geren raised his eyebrows and said, "way above average..."

An update on A's uber-prospect, and friend of the show (hear his episode here) Chris Carter: at age 21, Chris had 13 more homers than anyone else in the Cal League. With another 4 homers in the Cal League playoffs, I'm thinking the man's earned a promotion, big time...

Some have taken to calling the Giants' Pablo Sandoval the Round Mound of Pound. Passable... but I prefer Mychael Urban's entry: Kung Fu Panda! Admit it, it fits...

You be the judge.

ESPN reports the Giants are one team interested in an Asian youth who wants to take Hideo Nomo's historic voyage one step further;

Nancy Gay is 100% right: time to give Bay Area NFL owners an earful. It's a tragedy, and the time has come for an all-out boycott. Problem is, stage a walkout, and this could happen...

It's official: Monta lied about how he got hurt — and it wasn't in a gym. Question is, is this more Jeff Kent or Latrell Sprewell, or just a tempest in a teapot?

I'm just wondering, as the NHL preseason gets underway: will the Sharks, with a rookie coach, maintain the top spot in the national preseason spotlight?

Okay, thanks as always for your insightful (and even your vindictive) comments! We'll catch you again soon, on the Nor Cal Pro Sports Report!
