It's time for a special Father's Day edition of The NOR CAL Report! This week, Giants stalwart and family man Bengie Molina joins the lads for an exclusive chat about what family means to him — including the young guns he shares his long summers with. There are more exclusive Giants interviews to come, plus a fountain of news on the local squads this week:
The G-Men surge toward the All-Star break with a red-hot pitching staff and a rare Bay Series sweep. But if they have the game's best record over the last three weeks, why does it seem they're no closer to the Dodgers?
The A's ran into a buzz saw in Tim Lincecum and company, but that shouldn't dull the luster on their seven-game win streak, led by their super-young horses. With the Green and Gold in a division no one wants, is another move forward in the works?
The Earthquakes put a two-game unbeaten streak together, only to go pointless in Seattle. But right now, one step forward, one step back is a pretty satisfactory dance for the tremors.
And the Raiders look to bolster their well-hyped offense with a key signing on the defensive side. But will the new guy mean more W's, or just more dollar signs?
Happy Daddy Day, to yours and ours. We're always family first — on The NOR CAL Report!
UP NEXT: Giants speedster Andres Torres joins the boys for a candid chat session. The Giants' clubhouse is a-buzz, but that ticking clock means Mannywood is just around the corner. A's fans know the time is now, to right the ship or sell off the spare parts. The Earthquakes look to mesh with some new faces, while the Niners and Raiders look toward their fall debuts.

We touch on it on this week's 'cast, but the first item here has to be a full-throated shout-out to Jim Moorehead, the Giants' Senior Director of Media Relations. The franchise media relations gig can be a tough one; you have to say "no" an awful lot, or you risk exposing the players to the wrong people. Kudos to Jim and his staff for having the perspective to evaluate us on our merits — and for the good taste to give us the nod! We've got some great interviews to share with you in the coming months, from young colts like Matt Cain to old-school legends like Will Clark...
Remember as you grab your ballots: this week's guest on the Report, Bengie Molina, has still never been honored with an All-Star berth — obscene, if you ask me. A complex and sensitive man, Bengie agonized over facing his former squad this week...
And speaking of All-Stars, if you're wondering what to make of the A's rather anonymous season, don't forget that newcomer Adam Kennedy has unexpectedly put together a sterling season of his own...
Win or lose, the Earthquakes have an event to look forward to in their annual skirmish agains tthe Galaxy at the Oakland Coliseum. Yes, the 'Quakes' weak attack doesn't help ESPN bill the broadcast, but it's certainly nice to see Darren Huckerby back to form...
Have you heard? June ESPN Mag cover boy Lionel Messi and UEFA champions FC Barcelona, wrapping up an incredible year, are coming to play at Candlestick Park. The many supporters of Messi as the world's best player cite this amazing goal vs. Getafe...
As Ray Ratto writes, the 49ers' QB situation is clear as mud. Look, I'm as big an Alex Smith apologist as anyone — and there's no question that, particularly compared to Shawn Hill, his arm and legs look the part. But how has Hill not earned this job? I agree with Commissioner Goodell: lets turn all this training camp time into something a lot more interesting and productive...
Just ran into an old friend, writer Jonathan Curiel, formerly of the Chronicle Sporting Green and other departments. (How many people do you know who've podcasted with Jimmy Carter and Boutros Boutros-Ghali?) Jon's writing for a new site, covering current world events and leaning philosophically toward a Slate.com or Huffington Post. The name is Trueslant.com...
The name won't ring many bells, but the Emory University athletic community lost a guy this week, Clyde "Doc" Partin, with over 50 years of service. I knew Doc, played a little catch with him, and so on. Nothing to sober you on Father's Day weekend like the loss of a baseball lifer. Best to Doc's surviving family.

Apologies, RT -- you got me. Messi was the cover on the June 1 ESPN The Mag (not SI). You can see it by going to: http://gallery.pictopia.com/espnmag/gallery/S640536/photo/8137949/?o=0

Where is the college football love. The bears are ranked sixth in the nation in some poles. They have to be considered the best team in bay area sports. Give us one bright spot in the foggy depths that is bay area sports

I got to admit, lucca1, the Bears are indeed the best thing going around here, at least until hockey season. I'll point to our URL for why we haven't talked more about it. For the record, plenty of NOR CAL listeners relish a Rose Bowl -- but I'm saying next week's voyage to Oregon won't be easy...
